Korean-English Translators Needed

A Cha reader is looking for translators/poets who translate Korean poetry into English. The reader's mother writes poetry in Korean. They would like to have individual poems translated into English, possibly leading to a print-on-demand book. If that happens, the translators would be credited. There may also be a small fee for successful translations. If you are interested, please contact Cha editors at editors@asiancha.com and we will pass on the details.

A Missive from Dzanc Books

Dear Editors of Online Journals:

As we hope you are aware, the latest edition of Dzanc's Best of the Web (2009) has just been published. Dzanc's BotW is a project near and dear to our hearts, constructed solely to help celebrate and spread the word about the great writing appearing online.

Let us please, as publishers of BotW, get right to the point: Dzanc is not going to be able to continue to run this series if something does not change. With all the work we did last year to set up readings for BotW 2008 - and as we are continuing to do in 2009 - as well as standard production costs, which are higher for this book than any other we publish annually, we lost money in 2008. Any money we might make on BotW 2009 would go 100% back into our planned BotW 2010.

This is, as said, a labor of love. We feel the best writing in the world is taking place online now and if it requires a print anthology to drive this point home, then Dzanc is willing to do so. Our BotW also contains the most collective index of all the online lit journals publishing today. What we are asking of you then, and the reason for this missive, is to help spread the world, place a little love for the BotW on your site, your blog and journal. Maybe send a note out to your mailing lists. We have BotW specific banners available, as well as a special deal for those placing orders for both BotW 2008 and 2009. If you have any questions about the series or either particular issue that would help you with a posting on your site, simply send to info@dzancbooks.org.

We believe this series is capturing the best of what is being published. We'll happily hold it up against the Best American Short Stories series, one that has included 1 or 2 stories from online journals since its inception, and only because Guest Editors demanded those particular pieces be considered. We are all in this together and we want the world to know what is being published online is the most exciting form of writing today. We believe people visiting your sites would be among the group most interested in getting their hands on this book. We truly need for many more people to get interested and start buying this annually for it to be able to continue. Thanks for your help.

All best,Steven Gillis, Dan Wickett, Matt Bell

CHA is one of the most approachable markets out there?

As of today (Sunday 12 July 2009), Cha ranks among the 25 Most Approachable Poetry Markets on Duotrope's Digest.

This is interesting: we certainly reject far more submissions than we accept them. Perhaps selected writers are more willing to report response time. Writers whose works we have rejected, however, may not even want to hear from us again, let alone do us a favour to report our response time.

That said, it is quite heartening that a writer whose work we rejected wrote us this message: "Thank you for your note. As a token of my appreciation, let me suggest that you revise your rejection letter to read "a large number of submissions" instead of "a large amount of submissions," since submissions are countable. Best wishes for your continued success!"

Thank you, indeed, R. W., for your thoughtfulness!

We are eagerly waiting to see what this new lable "25 Most Approachable Poetry Markets" will mean for us, or, how long we will own the label.

Venue: Café 1001 - 1 Dray walk, 91 Brick Lane, London. E1

Jee Leong Koh's Equal to the Earth

Jee Leong Koh's new poetry collection, Equal to the Earth, is available from Bench Press. You can preview and buy the book here.

Priase for Jee Leong's poetry:

"Koh is a vigorous, physical poet very much captured by the expressive power of rhythm, rhetoric, and the lexicon. He is also, paradoxically, a poet in pursuit of the most elusive and delicate of human emotions. The contradiction is wonderful and compelling, and so are his poems."
—Vijay Seshadri, author of The Long Meadow (Graywolf Press)

"His poems are like the sexy nerd you meet at a bar, the one you really want to get to know better—with his glasses and ties on and nothing else."
—Christopher Hennessy, Outside the Lines: Talking with Contemporary Gay Poets (University of Michigan Press)

"Smart, irreverent, often unnerving, these sonnets smirk, smile, argue and bless. Jee Leong Koh has taken a month of days and rendered a very contemporary version of the artist as a young man."
—Marie Howe, on Koh’s Payday Loans

Jee Leong Koh's poetry was published in issue #6 of Cha.
